About this app

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) app from U.S. Customs and Border Protection allows Nationals of Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries to apply and pay for a travel authorization without a visa. The ESTA app is a mobile version of the ESTA application process and information that can also be found on the ESTA website at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov.

The ESTA app currently has two features available: Apply for New Individual Application and Search for Existing Application.
• The “GET STARTED” feature allows travelers to create a new ESTA application, pay for the ESTA and submit the application to be processed by the system to determine if they are eligible to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program without a visa. The system will provide the traveler with an automated response.
• The “FIND IT” feature allows travelers to check the status of their existing ESTA application..
CBP recommends that you apply for ESTA at the time you book your travel, but no less than 72 hours prior to boarding.

Warning! Don't bother with this app for baby or toddler! The app itself is very well designed but clearly wasn't tested with small children. It requires a *video selfie" of the applicant that has to be perfectly centered and at two specific distances and is very sensitive to small movements. All but impossible with a small child and I was tearing my hair out until I found out on reddit that the online form doesn't even require this, only the app. Wish I'd known sooner!

The instant form filling from scanning your passport seems to work okay but I tabbed out of the app to look at some info and it reset the app. On going back into the app I tried to load my saved applications but it kept failing to load, giving a 'server error'. I deleted my application and the app and tried again, then it wouldn't let me get past the step 1. Managed to search for my form using the reference and was able to carry on, but this happened 2 more times. Not impressed.

I had to apply for an esta in the browser because the live video photo that's forced to be taken by the user cannot be bypassed in the app and I struggled to take a picture of my six month old. babies do not sit still for that long at all. I only needed to upload her passport in the browser and she was approved. this app may need to consider this fact.
