The Google Gemini app is an AI assistant that can help supercharge your creativity and productivity.
This official app is free. Gemini gives you direct access to Google’s best family of AI models on your phone so you can:
- Get help with writing, brainstorming, learning, and more
- Summarize and find quick info from Gmail or Google Drive
- Use text, voice, photos and your camera to get help in new ways
- Say “Hey Google” to ask Gemini for help with what’s on your phone screen
- Make plans with Google Maps and Google Flights
If you have access to Gemini Pro it will be right here in the Gemini app.
The Gemini app is now live in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and more languages. See the full list of supported languages and countries here:

If you opt in to the Gemini app, it will replace your Google Assistant as the primary assistant on the phone. Some Google Assistant voice features aren't available through the Gemini app yet — including controlling media and routines. You can switch back to Google Assistant in settings.

6/20/25 - no it doesn't sound good Google. I have not changed my mind. Google needs to seriously provide the app with a lot more functionality before I can switchover. For example I CANNOT control the infotainment system in my car in the same fashion as Assistant. Instead of telling me what it can do, how about you listening to consumers and adding the needed functionality that consumers want and need. Don't try to think you know what we want and need.

Overall it's a pretty good alternative to the Google Assistant. I didn't switch over until recently, because too many Assistant functions hadn't been ported over yet. My one major complaint is that seemingly no part of the Gemini Assistant is stored on the device. It would be nice if the basic utilities, like setting a timer, didn't require Internet. (why do I have 256 gb anyway?) My Internet is spotty at times, and it'd be nice if that didn't completely cripple the assistant for basic function

AI searches are great. But this is an absolute nightmare for navigation needs after a "hey google" trigger. The previous Google assistant immediately opened Google maps if given a command like "take me home" or "take me to work". Meanwhile this thing reads an essay about the distance and time to get there. Just show me the navigation, for heavens sake! The voice trigger is there so we can operate hands free, which is extra important when driving!
